Adopting a corporate management style helps instil a professional air that benefits the volunteering sector, according to new research.

National development agency Volunteering England surveyed visitors to its website and found that seven in ten supported the introduction of a more professional ethos at volunteer organisations.

Government minister Dawn Primarolo will visit Portsmouth next week to launch the national and local Pathfinder reports.

The project is designed to explore the voluntary and community sectors potential ability to deliver public services and the visit of the paymaster general is sure to highlight its importance.

Portsmouth has been praised as it one of only five authorities in the country to have Pathfinder status, thereby outlining the dedication to the voluntary and community sector in the city.

The Charity Commission has proposed a rethink of voluntary organisation annual returns, which is designed to improve public access to the register of charities.

Under the plans, returns will be completed online and changes to the public register completed overnight, so that the public have access to the latest information more swiftly.

The public and private sectors in the UK are set to sign an historic concordat that will pave the way for a wider adoption of progressive working practices.

Trades Union Congress general secretary Brendan Barber and Richard Lambert, director general of the Confederation of British Industry, will be the first signatories on the accord masterminded by not-for-profit organisation Work Wise UK.

The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) has today announced the appointment of Liz Atkins as the new director of public policy.

Ms Atkins, who is former director of strategy and communications at the National Housing Federation, will lead the organisation’s 45-strong team from January 15th 2007.
