Budget cuts may affect jobs in social care
Jobs in social care may suffer as the budget for adult education is slashed, it has been suggested.
Alastair Thomson, principal policy officer at the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE), expressed his alarm at the proposed spending cuts, detailed in a NIACE report.
The release states that almost one in five of Learning and Skills Council-funded educators reduced opportunities for adult learners with learning difficulties between 2006 and 2008 because of altered funding.
Alongside this, the Association of Colleges said that almost £200 million of funding for colleges will be cut, with the courses affected most likely to be catering, care, British Sign Language and youth workers.
Mr Thomson said that the cuts could "destroy" social mobility.
.
"Adults who want to take responsibility for developing their careers and enriching their lives rather than waiting for their employer to get around to it are going to be the losers," he added.
