Councils ”need to help businesses in adversity”

Posted in Central Govt, Local Govt on the June 30th, 2009

Those working in local government are being urged to do more to improve the contribution that their own regulatory services make, it has been suggested.

In doing so, the Local Better Regulation Office (LBRO) states that councils can help to support their business communities during the ongoing economic crisis.

As such, it claims councils - in area such as licensing, trading standard and environmental health - should look to engage face-to-face with businesses to understand the challenges they are presented with and to develop collaborative approaches to deliver shared priorities on a local and national scale.

"Better regulation has an important part to play, supporting business and protecting communities. Local authority regulatory services are often the most visible face of councils to the business community," Clive Grace, chair of the LBRO, states.

He goes on to call for councils to "be active in adversity", as the leadership of those with local government jobs can play a crucial role in developing solutions to manage through the global downturn.

Such claims come as John Denham, communities and local government secretary, recently pointed out that while local authorities will receive an increase in central government funding they will have to make the money received from taxpayers work harder than ever before.
