Councils called on to tackle climate change
Those working for local authorities need to do more in tackling climate change, Friends of the Earth suggests.
By taking action to add insulation and install green energy technology, the organisation claims that councils could reduce buildings” carbon footprints by some 40 per cent by 2020.
Doing so could also offer opportunities for those looking for work in the public sector, as it claims that at least 70,000 "green jobs" could be created to carry out such work.
Positions which could be created include builders and plumbers as well as administrative staff, something that could interest those searching for planning jobs.
Andy Atkins, executive director for Friends of the Earth, states: "Local councils must play a big part in slashing the UK’’s carbon emissions to help avoid runaway climate change."
He adds that with the country’’s economy in "such a sorry state", Britain "could really use a boost from new green jobs", as a number of councils are already leading the way in carrying out carbon-cutting programmes.
Such news come as the Audit Commission claimed that those with local government jobs need to consider how they can use their office space and other facilities in a more effective manner and exploit them to their full business potential.
