Rewarding workers ”an incentive”

Rewarding workers can act really well as an incentive, one sector commentator has advised.

In news that may be of interest to those concerned with talent management, Dilys Robinson, a principal research fellow at the Institute For Employment Studies, said a scheme such as recognising a team member as the employee of the month or giving them a weekend holiday could be "great".

However, she warned that some people might find it "slightly distasteful" if they are of the opinion that they are simply doing their job.

Ms Robinson added that sometimes a personal touch or non-financial award could work just as well.

"It all comes down to understanding your workforce - what will motivate different groups of people in the workforce and it won”t be the same thing for everybody," she concluded.

According to ”What workers want”, a report based on an extensive YouGov poll of more than 2,500 people at work in Britain, the most commonly reported discrimination is on the grounds of age, which is complained of by 640,000 employees.
