Households in temporary accommodation falling

Posted in Housing on the June 13th, 2008

The number of individuals living in temporary accommodation is falling, according to a new report released this week.

Homelessness rates have fallen by 11 per cent in the last 12 months according to Homelessness Minister Iain Wright.

Today’s figures show that authorities in the south-east, north-east and east Midlands have all achieved the government’s 2010 target of reducing homelessness rates by 50 per cent.

Currently, figures show there are 77,510 families living in temporary accommodation compared to 87,120 this time last year, suggesting that skills frameworks in operation for housing jobs maybe proving beneficial.

Mr Wright said: "2003 was the first year that local authorities were required to have a homelessness strategy in place and we have seen an almost continuous decrease in numbers ever since."

In related news, fifteen organisations from around the country that help homeless individuals have won part of a £500,000 grant to develop their innovative business ideas.

The scheme was set up to develop new social initiatives as part of the government’s continuing fight to reduce homelessness.
