Calls made for more elected mayors

Posted in Planning on the June 13th, 2008

The New Local Government Network (NLGN) is calling for more elected mayors in the UK, citing a higher degree of public recognition and a greater degree of accountability as major factors.

Following the highly publicised race to be London Mayor and the recent local council elections - and the disparity in voter turnout between the two - the organisation believes that an enhanced mayoral system would boost voting figures.

Such a move could well impact upon those looking for regional recruitment portals serving public sector organisations.

The NLGN claims that mayoral campaigns focus more on the individual than the party and make the public feel more involved with the issues of the day and the resolutions being proposed by the candidates.

In other news, the NLGN has announced its backing for government initiatives to give local councils a greater say in the running of their local police forces.

The announcement was made as part of a new policing green paper that will look into ways to make police forces more accountable to local authorities.
