Investment unveiled for social care volunteers
Volunteers play a crucial supporting role for those working in the health and social care sector, it has been claimed.
Speaking at the St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, health secretary Alan Johnson stated that volunteers "are vital to the lifeblood of the NHS and social care services".
He added that in addition to being of benefit to patients volunteering with the social care sector can help people be happier.
Mr Johnson’s comments come as he announced a new initiative aimed at boosting levels of management and support for volunteers and increasing investment for those looking to getting involved with health-related projects within in social care and the third sector.
In turn, this could help to improve the skills framework of those operating within the social work sector.
Justin Davis Smith, chief executive for Volunteering England, added that the scheme will help support managers with the various costs related to volunteers such as training and administrative expenses.
Last month, the Social Enterprise London unveiled guidance for social enterprises to assist them in securing public care and health contracts.
