South Cambs Council achieves big gains

Corporate governance arrangements have been significantly improved by South Cambridgeshire District Council over the last year the independent Audit Commission has revealed in its latest report.

The council has improved in a variety of areas including its leadership in addressing local issues and its ability to communicate with the public.

Empty homes offer options amid ‘rapid change’

The housing market is undergoing a period of rapid change, with a leading campaign group urging the government to do more to capitalise on the number of empty homes.

Recent property price data has pointed to a slowdown in the rate of growth and even, in some cases, reverses, as the market cools for the first time in decades following years of dramatic double digit growth in most regions across the country.

Public sector jobs on the rise

Employment in the public sector increased by 7,000 in the fourth quarter, according to the latest figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Taking into account seasonal adjustments, the ONS said that employment in the sector rose to 5.78 million people by the end of the quarter.

Yorkshire and Humber’s local govt lead the way

Yorkshire and Humber’s performance at the Local Government Chronicle Awards has been met with approval by local figures in the public sector.

The ceremony, which saw 17 national awards handed out at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, proved to be a positive night for the public sector in Yorkshire and Humber, with a range of councils in the area performing well alongside Kirklees Council’s top award for being the best local authority in the country.

Teignbridge council forges network partner links

Teignbridge council has announced it is to become the first local authority in the county of Devon to pilot a property maintenance scheme, it has been revealed.

In forming links as network partners with the Devon Care and Repair Handyperson Scheme, those working for the public sector body aim to carry out quick and effective repairs to homes.
