‘More people with disabilities volunteering’

Posted in Charity/Voluntary on the March 26th, 2008

An increasing number of people with disabilities are volunteering within the conservation sector, it has been revealed.

Conservation firm BTCV claims in its diversity report that a tenth of its "key volunteers", those who give a certain period of time to volunteer, have a disability.

Two years ago, however, the third sector group did not have any such volunteers.

Meanwhile, the proportion of those with paid jobs at the charity who have a disability job with the charity has surged from 2.5 per cent to 12 per cent during the same period of time, Third Sector reports.

Tom Flood, chief executive of BTCV, said: "The results highlight the success of BTCV’s policy to include individuals and groups traditionally under-represented in the environmental sector."

Meanwhile, more than a third of all those involved with BTCV are from backgrounds traditionally under-represented in environmental volunteering.

Such news may interest those seeking jobs within the charity and voluntary sector via a regional recruitment portal.

In other news, the Institute for Volunteering Research and the National Centre for Social Research recently advised those working for charities to do more to encourage younger people to volunteer.
