Skilled workers ‘are of benefit’

Posted in Social Work on the January 16th, 2008

The majority of those with care jobs are happy in their work, new research shows.

A survey by Skills for Care indicates that among such people, which could include those working in the public sector, 90 per cent of staff are content with their job.

Meanwhile, more than two-thirds (69 per cent) are now trained to at least NVQ Level 2, with a further 11 per cent at Level 1.

Such statistics may be of use to public sector leaders looking to use a skills framework to boost the capabilities of their staff.

Donald Hoodless, chair of the agency, claimed that trained workers in the care profession "will ultimately benefit people who use [their] services".

However, the study also showed that just 39 per cent of staff feel their work is appreciated, with Mr Hoodless claiming that more must be done to improve employee recruitment and retention rates.

Earlier this month, John Denham, secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills, claimed that employers, which may include those in the public sector, should do more to improve the skills framework of their employees.
