Investment into vulnerable children ‘welcomed’

Posted in Social Work on the January 11th, 2008

Those working for charities have welcomed proposals by the government to create a "safety net" to help the thousands of children who run away, it has emerged.

In news that might interest people seeking social care jobs, children’s secretary Ed Balls is to announce a three-pronged strategy into helping young people, which includes Safe Places - which reviews how local authorities can provide protected areas for runaways to stay.

Meanwhile, the Safe Procedures and Safe People initiatives will offer guidance for councils and those individuals who support young runaways.

Such an announcement may also be welcomed by third sector institutions aiming to use a regional recruitment portal to attract people looking for social care work.

In addition, a cross-party group will be created to discuss ideas on implementing new services.

Bob Reitemeier, chief executive for the Children’s Society, said: "The announcement of a cross-departmental group to take responsibility for this group of children is fantastic news and made possible by successful collaboration between the government, police, local authorities and many other children’s charities."

Earlier this week, Beverley Hughes and Ed Miliband announced that a £16 million investment is to be made into improving support for both disadvantaged and vulnerable children and adults.
