Ministry of Defence announces skills advancement programme

Posted in Planning on the September 27th, 2007

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is to offer its employees the chance to study for nationally-recognised management qualifications.

Under the move, the ministry has signed a two-year partnership with the Chartered Management Institute, where students will be able to go on an Executive Diploma in Management course allowing them to develop skills relating to managing performance, resources and operations.

There will also be the ability to learn how to manage information systems, implement recruitment plans and develop projects, which in turn could be useful for people looking to move into public sector jobs and those aiming to attract such candidates via skills portals.

The Executive Diploma in Strategic Management allows people to advance on the skills framework taught on the above course as they learn about strategic positioning, planning and implementation.

Jo Causon, director of marketing and corporate affairs for the Chartered Management Institute, said: "In the current skills crisis, the MoD is not only showing a commitment to its own personnel, but the wider UK economy.

"Organisations across all sectors should follow its example and equip individuals with the skills needed to drive UK competitiveness."

Earlier this month, Mike O’Brien, minister for work and pensions, welcomed an announcement by the EU that England is to receive a £2 billion investment in jobs and skills.
