Draft housing strategy ‘good news for Londoners’

Posted in Housing on the September 19th, 2007

The focus given to affordable housing provision in the new draft housing strategy has been described as "good news for Londoners" by one pressure group.

People seeking housing jobs and those looking for a regional recruitment portal to fill such roles may be interested to read the opinions of housing charity Shelter, which states that those "at the sharp end" of the housing crisis will particularly welcome the move.

Adam Sampson, spokesperson for the charity, remarks: "It is now down to London boroughs to deliver on the target set by the Mayor that half of all newly built homes should be affordable.

"Shelter urges councils to put aside their party political differences and work with the Mayor to give all Londoners access to a safe, secure home."

He warned that more than two-thirds of new housing in the capital is currently snapped up by buy-to-let investors, while stating that the mayor and local authority policymakers would need to focus on ensuring housing was made available to those who need it.

Yesterday, Shelter released a report suggesting that the majority of boroughs were not currently supplying enough affordable homes to support their communities.
