Tories suggest planning policy upheavals

Posted in Planning on the September 17th, 2007

A number of far-reaching changes to the UK planning system have been suggested by a Conservative party working group led by John Gummer, former environment secretary..

The reforms to the current system, which may be of interest to those in talent pools of planning jobs candidates, include the dissolution of the current regional planning scheme and the ending of Building Regulations, the Planning Portal reports.

Meanwhile, a new Department of Sustainable Growth would be made responsible for planning policy, while a moratorium would be effected on airport expansion.

Additionally, the group has suggested that all future planning be subject to new assessments on "spatial or location efficiency", the portal states, while a number of detailed policies would result in the streamlining of the development control system.

In other planning news relevant to those seeking jobs through a regional recruitment portal, a high court judge has ruled that the Northern Ireland rural development policy introduced last year is unlawful.

The policy represented an effective ban on granting consent for single abodes in the countryside.
