Cooper details £500 million housing boost

Posted in Housing on the September 17th, 2007

The government has unveiled a £500 million package of proposals to drive forward housebuilding schemes across the UK.

Housing minister Yvette Cooper has stated that the new Housing and Planning Delivery Grant will be used as an incentive for councils to increase the pace of housing supply delivery.

In order to qualify for the money councils must demonstrate that they are pushing forward good practice and sustainable efficiencies in planning and building.

Housing jobs candidates supplying talent on demand for the sector may be interested to hear Ms Cooper’s opinion on the drive to create more homes: "This money is about extra support for the councils which are already doing their bit.

"Some of them are doing a lot of work to support additional housing, but we know that others really need to do more. I want this new cash injection to push local authorities to raise their game."

It is hoped that the funding will help to deliver on government promises to increase housebuilding to a rate of 240,000 each year - part of a commitment to make three million new homes available by 2020.
