Waste charging debate ’should be taken up by local government’
The current consultation on waste charging has been described as a "red herring" by one body, which suggests that responsibility for running waste management schemes should be transferred to local government level.
Making its comments this week, the New Local Government Network (NLGN) has stated that councils and their network partners should take the opportunity presented by the current debate to "meet waste management concerns over the long-term".
In news likely to be of interest to those seeking local government jobs, NLGN has published a pamphlet stating that waste management and charges for inappropriate use or abuse of services could be better implemented at ward and community level.
Anthony Brand, author of the report, How Can We Refuse?, remarks: "Councils and their partners should calculate, publish and distribute ward level (or similar) recycling rates.
"Incentives … could then be distributed to those wards that show the greatest improvement to be spent in a manner to be decided upon in consultation with residents from that locality."
Recently the NLGN stated that planning laws should be altered to provide increased opportunities for microgeneration facilities.
