Elderly mental health ‘not given the attention it deserves’
More needs to be done to provide support for people developing mental health difficulties as they get older, according to accommodation association Housing 21.
The body has made its comments following the publication of a report which details the results of a four-year inquiry into the subject.
Housing 21 was part of the board that conducted the inquiry, which established that more than 3.5 million older people who experience mental health problems do not have appropriate access to support facilities.
In news which may interest for talent pools of those seeking social work jobs, spokesperson for the firm Melinda Phillips, remarks: "Older people’s mental health problems are poorly understood and not given the priority they deserve in policy, practice and research.
"Through Housing 21 Dementia Voice - our centre of excellence in dementia care - we provide exemplary evidence based quality services for people with dementia."
She added that Housing 21 is committed to the provision of a high quality of life and the support of the mental wellbeing of its residents.
Chair of the inquiry Dr June Crown stated last month that a "radical shift" was needed in the way that mental health issues for older people are addressed.
