Deafblind charity receives development grant

Sense, the national deafblind organisation, has announced that it has received a development grant of £30,000 to support its charity work with older people.

The charity has been awarded the grant by the Freemasons’ Grand Charity for activities in the east of England aimed at preventing older deafblind people from becoming isolated and vulnerable as a result of their disability. Continue reading…

ILM launches social enterprise course

The Institute for Leadership and Management (ILM) has created a new three-day course for both novices and experienced managers and consultants in the voluntary sector.

As part of the new course in Understanding Social Enterprise, available at nine centres across the UK initially and leading to a level five new National Qualifications Framework (NQF) award, students will examine case studies from successful and failed social enterprises. Continue reading…

Environmental obligations for planning ‘will remain’

Ministers have insisted that environmental obligations will remain when a revised planning policy on climate change for English councils is published towards the end of the year.

Responding to reports about plans to drop the "Merton Rule", the government has insisted that the policy will remain in place and planning authorities and their network partners will be required to ensure that environmental measures are in place before approving applications, potentially increasing the number of planning jobs available. More calls for communities bank holiday

Voluntary organisations are calling on the government to introduce a new bank holiday to promote community activities and encourage more people to volunteer for charity work.

A community day would help to bring the UK in line with other EU countries, whose workers enjoy more days off than those in Britain, the voluntary sector claims.

At the same time it would also provide an excellent opportunity to promote the work that charities and voluntary organisations do and help people recognise the important work that volunteers and those working in the not-for-profit sector do. Continue reading…

Insurers voice concerns over flood plains

The UK insurance industry is calling on the government to review its planning policies and to reconsider its decision to allow the development of new homes on flood plains.

The Association of British Insurers has written to environment secretary Hilary Benn urging him to increase spending on the nation’s flood defences and drainage management. Continue reading…
