Trade unions ‘could provide welfare services’

Posted in Social Work on the May 31st, 2007

Trade unions could provide welfare services, according to the minister for employment and welfare reform, Jim Murphy.

Mr Murphy called for trade unions to play a central role in the provision of services and support to get people back into work.

Speaking at the TUC’s Disability Conference, he said that such a move could help create a more effective and efficient re-employment service.

He continued that trade unions have much to offer in the way of experience and could therefore provide part of the range of services aiming to get people back to work.

Mr Murphy said: "I want a greater role for trade unions in providing public services, particularly welfare.

"Trade unions have a successful track record in reducing workplace ill-health and accidents because they know the people they are campaigning for, their individual circumstances and the workplace," he added.

A meeting with interested unions will be held by Mr Murphy later in the year.
