Working in the Public Sector
A newly released Public TV video actively explores the viability of working in the Public Sector. The programme takes a frank look at the current working opportunities available in the sector including insight into the advantages and disadvantages from interviews with some leading Recruitment and Talent Management specialists.
In a sector that employs more than 5.8 million people in the UK alone, the demand for bright, intelligent and career focused individuals is increasing. “One third of all public sector employees are due to retire in the next 10 years” states Richard Tyrie, founding director for JGP a Talent on Demand company that focuses on Public sector recruitment.
This forecasting predicts a ‘wealth of opportunity’ for people considering a career in the sector. Tending to attract the type of person who can see themselves making a contribution to society, the public sector involves careers not only in teaching, nursing, and the police force, but also local government, council work and housing.
Sampson Law from Unison, the largest public sector trade union in Britain, suggests there are certain traditional benefits from working in the public sector, and these may include work-life balance, flexi-time and pensions. However he also states that there are certain conflicts because of this on budget constraints due to high social need, as these can’t always be met by public service provision, this can lead to frustration within public services.
As the Public Sector becomes a primary career choice for many individuals it is important for anyone considering applying for a job to be very specific about why an organisation should hire you. Due to the increasing competitiveness for these jobs, organisations are placing a larger emphasis on qualifications, and the professionalism of support positions to distinguish between candidates. Richard Tyrie admits that for candidates these days to ‘get their foot in the door’ of the Public Sector, they need to do their homework. Job positions are advertised mainly with job and person specifications so an individual gets a real feel for the type of work they will be performing.
The release of this programme also coincides with the lead up to Public Sector Jobs Week which will be held from May 14-18th, which will also be highlighting the career opportunities and choices available in the Public Sector.
