Digital recycling project yields cheap PCs
A digital recycling project being overseen by Bristol city council is delivering cheap PCs to the local community.
The project is supplying recycled and refurbished computers for as little as £150, according to Sam Rossiter of Bristol Wireless.
The refurbished computers are installed with a Debian Linux operating system, featuring a recommended set of software to cover most users’ needs.
By offering refurbished machines, the project is helping Bristol meet the aims of the European Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive by reducing waste arising from electronic equipment.
Stephen Hilton, director of Connecting Bristol, said: "It is fantastic to see this project get off the ground and as we move forward in developing a digital strategy for the city this is exactly the kind of project we aim to support."
Bristol Wireless is carrying out the project in partnership with Byteback computer recycling.
All computers come with at least a Pentium III processor, 256 MB of memory, a 17 inch monitor as well as a keyboard and mouse.
