Planners lobby to bridge public-private divide

Posted in Planning on the February 8th, 2007

A group of building and planning stakeholders has called for the gap between the private and the public sectors to be closed.

The unique consortium’s report, entitled ‘Future Planners: Propositions for the next age of planning’, suggests that bridging this gap and using resources from both sectors is the only way in which the profession can prosper.

Deputy mayor of London Nicky Gavron said: “I welcome this important work, from a diverse range of authoritative organisations, on the future planner.

“Planners have a key role in addressing our most pressing social needs, from climate change to affordable housing. We have to get communities, developers, and environmentalists together to agree how to move to a sustainable future,” she added.

Hilary Herbert, the president of the Planning Officers Society, also recently said that there is now “a requirement for sustainable development that runs right through the policy context for planning”.

The report was launched by Kate Barker and was based on research conducted by the think tank Demos, and also had input from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
